Practical Estimates of the Effect of Publication Bias in Meta-Analysis

Meta-analysis is a quantitative method for synthesising results from individual studies to estimate an overall effect. Since its introduction in the social sciences by Glass [11], there has been an enormous increase, both in epidemiology and in clinical trials, in the use of meta-analysis as a statistical technique for combining the results of individual analyses; and it has become an important tool for providing quantitative overviews of areas where many such individual studies have been carried out. The interested reader is referred to [3,4] for details of the methods available.
